Lake Havasu - Home Of The Original London Bridge
The original London Bridge once spanned the River Thames in London, England. In 1962 the bridge was in need of repair or replacement due to the increase in daily traffic across its stone structure. Wealthy land developer Robert McCulloch purchased the bridge for $2,460,000 and had it loaded onto a cargo ship brick by brick.
The bridge was then re-assembled, brick by brick, at a spot on the Pittsburgh Point Peninsula. After completion, a construction company was contracted to dredge the area beneath the bridge, creating the Bridgewater Channel Canal. The peninsula then became the island we see today. The channel connects Thompson Bay to Lake Havasu City and creates a shortcut for boaters between the bay and the northern part of the lake.
